A Rosneft scientific and research geological expedition, organised in collaboration with the M. V. Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University as part of the Arctic Floating University programme, departed from the port of Tiksi. The Mikhail Somov, an expedition vessel, will operate in the Laptev Sea, near the Novosibirsk Islands archipelago.
Specialists from Rosneft’s Arctic Research Centre will collect rock samples for analysis of their mineral composition, structure, origin, and spatial distribution. A comprehensive analysis of the collected material will expand the knowledge base on the geological evolution of the region and the potential of the Eastern Arctic’s oil and gas source rocks. The fieldwork in the Novosibirsk Islands will be carried out in compliance with the highest standards of environmental safety and protection.
The expedition follows the Company’s long-standing work studying sedimentary basins in the Russian Arctic. From 2014 to 2019, scientists studied the geological structure of the Arctic islands. In 2020, Rosneft initiated a scientific programme on stratigraphic drilling in the northern seas. Nowadays, scientists have over 2,000 metres of core material at their disposal, which is a unique stone extracted from hard-to-reach regions of the Russian Arctic.
