Rosneft Scientists Conduct Unique Study of Ancient* Oil Varieties

Source: Rosneft – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Geochemists at Rosneft’s Tomsk Research Institute have published** the results of a 30-year study into ancient oil varieties. The findings are important for reconsidering the history of hydrocarbon formation. This new understanding of oil’s structure will improve the accuracy of oil and gas prospect assessments and the efficiency of deposit development.

This pioneering study, which was unprecedented in terms of its duration and scope, aimed to investigate alkylbenzenes, a key oil component that affects the quality of gasoline. Between 1998 and 2025, specialists from the Tomsk-based institute analysed over 500 types of oil from 11 oil-producing regions in Russia and overseas.

Thanks to technological advances in the study of alkylbenzene composition in oil samples, a machine learning-based approach has been employed for the past two years. The resulting models have accurately determined the origin of the oil and the conditions under which it formed.

High concentrations of tert-butylbenzene, a substance previously considered uncharacteristic of such geological formations, have been detected for the first time in a number of ancient oil varieties in Eastern Siberia (the Kuyumbinskoye and Yurubcheno-Tokhomskoye fields, which are developed by Rosneft enterprises).

The results of the study help to more accurately determine the initial source of the oil’s formation. The presence of tert-butylbenzene indicates that the oil belongs to the Riphean age (ancient varieties). This data is used in basin modelling to predict oil migration and the oil and gas potential of the territory, as well as to inform field development approaches.

* The oil was extracted from rocks ranging in age from 1.1 billion to 5 million years old, from the Meso-Neoproterozoic to the Cenozoic era.

** The article “Composition and distributional patterns of C3- and C4-alkylbenzenes in oils and source rocks from Meso–Neoproterozoic to Cenozoic” authored by Nikolai Oblasov, Ilya Efthora, Ivan Goncharov, and Svetlana Fadeeva has been published in the renowned international journal Organic Geochemistry, which specializes in research on all aspects of organic geochemistry.

Rosneft Organises Round Table Discussion on Conservation of Steller’s Sea Eagle in Khabarovsk Territory

Source: Rosneft – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Employees of the Komsomolsk Refinery (a subsidiary of Rosneft) and scientists from the Zapovednoe Priamurye Nature Reserve have held a roundtable discussion on issues related to conserving the population of Steller’s sea eagles, which are predators listed in Russia’s Red Book. Leading Russian ornithologists from Lomonosov Moscow State University and Amur State Teacher’s Training University attended the event, as well as specialists from the regional environmental protection prosecutor’s office and others.

Thanks to the support of Rosneft, the long-term project ‘Under the Strong Wing’ is successfully studying and protecting Steller’s sea eagles in the Khabarovsk Territory. The collaboration between the Komsomolsk Refinery and the Zapovednoe Priamurye Nature Reserve focuses on studying an important indicator species of the Amur River basin ecosystem.

During the project, field expeditions were organised in the Udyl Nature Reserve. Remote observations of birds were also conducted using photo and video equipment, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles. Additionally, laboratory studies were conducted for the first time on samples of fish consumed by eagles and the feathers of the birds of prey.

Ornithologists have collected valuable information about the lives of birds, enabling them to conclude that, despite the general decline in the global population of Steller’s sea eagles, the population in the Lower Amur region is stable. The most favourable breeding grounds for the birds are the shores of the protected Lake Udyl, where around 150 nests have been found.

During the discussion, the experts highlighted the project’s promising nature, given the many gaps in scientific knowledge about the life of Steller’s sea eagles. Ornithologists also emphasised the exceptional importance of the information obtained during the project for updating Russia’s Red Book and for developing environmental protection recommendations for companies operating in the Amur River basin and along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. These materials will also supplement educational programmes for schoolchildren and students.

Preserving the environment for future generations is one of the key areas of Rosneft’s development strategy. The Company and its subsidiaries are implementing a number of comprehensive programmes to preserve biodiversity and natural resources in the regions of operations. They are also striving to ensure environmentally friendly production processes and minimise their environmental impact. Ornithological projects are given special attention. Thanks to the support of its subsidiaries in various regions across the country, Rosneft is conducting research and developing measures to preserve and protect rare bird species such as Steller’s sea eagles, wild geese and white gulls, etc.

For Reference:

The Steller’s sea eagle is one of the largest birds in the world, and it nests only in the Russian Far East. Its global population is estimated to number between 5,000 and 7,000 individuals, around 1,200 of which live in the Khabarovsk Territory.

The species is listed as rare and highly vulnerable in all existing Red Books. The decline in their numbers is largely due to human activity, but there are other reasons as well, such as slow reproduction rates and changes in the hydrological regime of rivers.

Rosneft Improves Energy Performance at Production Facilities

Source: Rosneft – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Rosneft’s energy workers celebrate their professional holiday with new production achievements.

Improvement of production asset efficiency is one of the key components of the Rosneft’s strategy. In 2025, the Company’s enterprises implemented over 42,000 energy-saving measures, reducing energy consumption by 317,000 tonnes of standard fuel equivalent, which is more than RUB 7.8 billion in monetary terms.

This result stems from a systematic approach to rational energy resource utilization at all stages—from well drilling to outdoor lighting at production facilities.  Thanks to the high level of expertise of the Company’s specialists, the energy management system of Rosneft’s production facilities is constantly being improved.

The primary contribution to enhancing energy efficiency and ensuring reliable power supply to production facilities comes from measures at the Company’s exploration and production enterprises.

Udmurtneft, Taas-Yuryakh Neftegazodobycha, Verkhnechonskneftegaz, Vostsibнeftegaz, and RN-Krasnodarneftegaz achieved high energy efficiency indicators by optimizing mechanized operations, introducing pumps with higher efficiency ratings, energy-efficient motors and heating thermostats, and installing automated lighting control systems.  Samotlorneftegaz implemented 1,900 measures that saved approximately 230 million kWh.  The economic impact exceeded 1.1 billion rubles.

Energy specialists at the Company’s refining and petrochemical complex—Kuibyshev Refinery, Novokuibyshevsk Petrochemical Company, Novokuibyshevsk Refinery, and Komsomolsk Refinery—reduced energy resource consumption through production modernization, process optimization, and implementation of energy-efficient equipment.

Specialists from Rosneft’s scientific and engineering division in 2025 met the Company’s enterprises’ needs for energy facility design, development of prospective energy supply schemes, and provision of engineering services.  They designed over 615 km of overhead power transmission lines with voltages of 35-220 kV, electrical substations with a total capacity of 370 MVA, and thermal generation facilities with a combined capacity of 13 MW.  Conceptual design solutions were developed for constructing standardized modular power plants based on domestically manufactured gas turbine units with individual capacities ranging from 6 to 25 MW.  The key project involved Russia’s largest oil pumping station, including power supply for over 1,000 electrical consumers, cable lines, and overpasses with a total length of 1,500 km.

To meet growing energy demands, new energy facilities were commissioned at the Company’s new fields in 2025.  They are equipped with modern Russian-manufactured equipment adapted for uninterrupted operation in harsh climatic conditions, with automation that also reduces the need for personnel presence.

Bashneft launched the first digital substation, Mirnaya, in the Republic of Bashkortostan, rated at 110 kV.  Samotlorneftegaz commissioned a new electrical substation with voltage classes of 110/35/6 kV and a capacity of 40 MVA. Tyumenneftegaz at the Russkoye field commissioned the 110 kV PSP Zapolyarnaya electrical substation with an installed capacity of 2×16 MVA and a boiler house with an installed capacity of 232 MW.  RN-Vankor commissioned a new 110 kV Tagul electrical substation, while RN-Uvatneftegaz commissioned two new highly automated mobile 110 kV substations and a 35 kV substation.  Udmurtneft launched a dual-transformer 35 kV electrical substation.  At the Yurubcheno-Tokhomskoe field, Vostsibнeftegaz commissioned two electrical substations.

Reliable and efficient operation of the electric power industry is the foundation for the progressive development of the country’s economy.

We congratulate our colleagues on Power Engineers’ Day!
